A Study Of English-chinese Translation Of Historical Texts From Catford's Translation Theory

With the global development of modern world since the end of the cold war,there are more and more international communication and cooperation between Chinese culture and western culture.The understanding of history is more and more important in the process of globalization.In the history of the world,the rise of the West is the most striking historical event in recent hundreds of years.This history has important implications for the development of China.Why Europe? is an important reference book for this period of history.This thesis is focused on the study of English-Chinese translation of historical texts from Catford's translation theory.Catford's translation theory has been more and more emphasized by domestic scholars in recent years.There are two breakthrough points in this paper: one is the Translation Equivalence Theory,and the other is the Translation Shifts Theory.These two translation theories are also the most influential translation theories of Catford's.The paper introduces Catford's translation theory from its source and development,to the research status at home and abroad,and given a brief statement of the basic content and major theoretical point of view,as well as relevant research results.In addition,the paper have the introduction to the original text and translation texts of Why Europe,including the original authors,translators,content and language styles,etc and analyzes the text of Why Europe under Catford's translation theory.The selected theory is the Translation Equivalence Theory and the Translation Shifts Theory which systematically combs the two theories and analyzes the translation of texts from multiple angles and levels.Catford's translation transfer theory is applicable to many types of translations such as political economy,historical laws,literary works,and movie subtitling.This scientific translation theory has given us a clear direction and future for our translation practice.The wider field is waiting for us to explore.
