Nowadays, many scholars are studying the translation practice of scientific and technical texts under the guidance of Catford's translation theory.Aerospace texts and scientific and technical texts share many common features in language expression and sentences structure. The content of this kind of texts is reliable, informative and authoritative. The language of the texts has clear logic, objective statement and concludes many professional terms. The translated text is aviation regulations issued by Federal Aviation Administration. The aviation regulations mainly discuss precautions in the flight and explain the whole procedure to get pilot certificate. When translating the source text, the translator should completely deliver the original information to achieve translation equivalence of the source language and the target language in meaning. In order to achieve equivalence in meaning, the translator needs to achieve equivalence in both lexical level and syntactic level.Catford's translation also stresses on how to take proper translation methods to achieve translation equivalence of the source language and the target language in both lexical level and syntactic level.Under the guidance of Catford's translation theory, the translator uses translation equivalence and translation shifts to analyze and solve translation difficulties in this translation practice.Firstly, the translator resorts to literal translation and liberal translationto solve difficulties in lexical level to achieve textual equivalence or formal correspondence.Secondly, the translator relies on level-shifts to deal with tenses.Thirdly, the translator uses structure-shifts to shift passive sentences to active sentences, split long and complex sentences into several short sentences and adjust the original sentential order etc.The paper discusses the practice of E-C translation of the aerospace text. The paper consists of six parts. The first part is an introduction, including the background of the research, statues quo of research on Catford's translation theory and aerospace text translation at home and abroad. The second part is to briefly introduce the content of the original text, the language features of the original text and the requirement for the translator. The third part is to describe the whole translation process, including preparation before the translation, translation process and proofreading after the translation. The fourth part is to introduce the translation theory. In this part, the translator will explain the main ideas and the translation methods introduced by Catford. The fifth part is the most important part. This part exploresappropriate translation strategies under the guidance of Catford's translation theory to solve difficulties in the process of translation. The sixth part is a conclusion to summarize the gains and provide a reference for future researches.
