Translation is not only the transformation of two languages, but also the collision and communication between two cultures. The role of cultural factors in translation should not be underestimated.Since Xie Tianzhen first proposed the term "cultural image" in Medio Translatology in 1999,scholars have been paying increasing attention to the translation of Chinese cultural image. The translation of cultural image takes a decisive part in promoting cultural dissemination and communication among different nationalities. However, the distinctiveness and uniqueness of culture itself make cultural image translation a tough task.In recent years, the development of cognitive science has promoted the development of linguistics.More and more theories of cognitive linguistics have been used to discuss various translation problems.Script theory is an important part of cognitive linguistics. The translation activities under the guidance of script theory include script activation and script construction.Facing the text to be translated, the translator first activates the source-language scripts stored in his brain and then through processing, constructs new scripts that are understood by target-language readers.Focusing on the cultural images in political discourse, this thesis explores the translation of cultural images in Xi Jinping:the Governance of China from the perspective of script theory. The study specifically discusses two questions:What obstacles does the translator encounter when the script is activated? What strategies does the translator adopt when the script is constructed. The thesis, primarily employs the methodology of case analysis. At first,we classify the cultural images in Xi Jinping:the Governance of China and then discuss script activation and script construction by illustrating. The study finds that during the process of script activation, the translator may encounter such obstacles as script vacancy, script incorrespondence and script deviation and during the process of script construction, the translator may employ such strategies as constructing similar source-language scripts, supplementing target-language scripts, eliminating source-language scripts' mark, applying target-language marked scripts and omitting source-language scripts. The study indicates that the cultural images in political discourse are worthy of being researched, and it is workable to analyze them with script theory. This thesis explores the translation of cultural images in political discourse from the perspective of script theory in cognitive linguistics. On the one hand,it enriches the researches of cultural image;on the other hand,it also provides a new research perspective for political discourse.Additionally, the exploration of cultural images in Xi Jinping:the Governance of China not only shows the unique charm of Chinese culture but also contributes to cultural transmission and cross-cultural communication.
