In recent years,enterprises from all over the world have devoted to strengthen their images as qualified corporate citizens.As a way to present the fulfillment of social responsibility to the public(mainly the related stakeholders),Social Responsibility Report(CSRR)receives more and more attention from both corporates and the public while suitable writing skills of CSRR can help enterprises build positive images,and convey positive energy to the public.At the same time,readers can have a direct impresstion making judgement on the corporates through reading CSRRs.Based on Critical Discourse Analysis,this thesis aims to conduct a comparative analysis of Chinese and foreign petroleum corporates' CSRRs by means of Fairclough's three-dimensional model of CDA.Through the combination of qualitative and quantitative method,the author analyzes six 2016 CSR reports,comparing three reports of major domestic petroleum corporates: China National Petroleum Corporation(CNPC),China Petrochemical Corporation(Sinopec Group),China National Offshore Oil Corporation(CNOOC),with three reports of leading foreign petroleum corporates: BP,Royal Dutch Shell Corporate,ExonMobil.The author expects to obtain the mature experience of writing CSRR from foreign petroleum corporates.From text,discursive practice and social practice,the study makes a descriptive and interpretive analysis,concludes the writing features,and also analyzes discourses critically so as to reveal the ideology hidden in the CSRRs of petroleum industry.Firstly,at the stage of description,the thesis analyzes the linguistic features of Chinese and foreign petroleum CSRRs by employing the analytical tools of lexical choice,modality and transitivity.Through the analysis at this level,both Chinese and foreign petroleum corporates tend to use the words of energy supply,environmental protection and local developmet,and also show the positive images by using of tenses and modal verbs.Besides,the processes of transitivility also help enterprises express their fulfillment of social responsibility.Secondly,at the interpretation stage,the study analyzes the intertexutality and components of CSRRs to illustrate the discourse model in Chinese and foreign CSRRs.The results show that all the corporates try to build a positive image by largely employing positive reporting verbs,in which domestic petroleum corporates tend to be more objetive than foreign petroleum corporates.On the other hand,there are different key points in CSRRs of Chinese and foreign petroleum corporates.Chinese petroleum corporates concern more on their economic performance,while foreign petroleum corporates pay more attention on climate change and social performance.Lastly,at the stage of explanation,by analyzing the related cultural,economic and political factors,the author explains the hidden ideologies in Chinese and foreign petroleum CSRRs.The author also hopes to gain the experience of disclosing the fulfillment of social responsibility in CSRRs from western corporates.
