The horror film as a type of film has rich cultural implications and special artistic value.It overlaps with multiple spaces,uses various elements of terror,and acts on complex aesthetic psychological mechanisms.It brings strong sensory stimulation to audiences through the aesthetic illusion,releases the backlog of mediocre life,and stimulates new spiritual pursuits and aesthetic experiences.This paper uses space theory in the field of contemporary western literary theory,especially Henry Lefebvre's discourse of "space dialectics" to analyze British director Neil from the dimensions of material space,literary connotation space,psychological aesthetics space,and social meaning space.Marshall's horror movie The Descent highlights the unique value and significance of horror movies.This article is divided into four chapters.The first chapter focuses on the film material space,focuses on the natural landscape of the film The Descent-the cave,interprets the film's character activities and the material spatial characteristics of the space-time structure.The second chapter starts from the spiritual space,and discusses the literary value of the movie as the audiovisual art in the literary connotation space through the specific study of Plato's "caval" symbolism under the screen styling space,the color connotation under the film mechanism,and the film narration characteristics.The third chapter also uses the theory of spiritual space to psychologically combine the psychological changes of the film characters in the claustrophobic space with the spectator acceptance of the horror movie,express the origin and value of the "fear" in the horror movie,and find the inner aesthetic in the psychological space.The fourth chapter uses social space theory to explore the cultural connotation and social significance extended by the film from the ancient philosophy of fear purification tothe thinking of immediate alienation and the new direction of looking for women in the pleasure of “gazing”.This paper uses the three spatial theories of western literary aesthetics to construct four spatial frameworks in an innovative way: from the material,literary,psychological,and social perspectives,it interprets the space aesthetics of the film The Descent.
