A Report On The E-C Translation Of Perspectives On The South China Sea(Excerpts)

The translation report is written on basis of E-C translation of the first,fifth,sixth and ninth papers of Perspectives on the South China Sea.As a conference proceeding edited by Center for Strategic and International Studies(CSIS),Perspectives on the South China Sea comprehensively analyzes issues of the South China Sea.The four papers translated by the translator narrate some political facts about the South China Sea disputes and analyze challenges faced by China and ASEAN states when they resolve these problems from the legal,diplomatic and security dimensions to manage to provide a viable solution for policy makers.With a political genre,the language of the source text is concise and the content is somewhat professional.Following a basic introduction to the translation project,the report analyzes the linguistic and textual features of the source text and then expounds theory of semantic and communicative translation of Peter Newmark.Based on aims of translation,the report explains the translator's thoughts under the guidance of theory from the translation of words and sentences.In line with theory of semantic and communicative translation,the translator adopted lots of translation skills and methods including literal translation,free translation,annotation,addition,conversion,reorganization of the words sequence and so on to present reasons why the word or sentence is translated in this way and the consideration involved in the course of translation,so as to convey an accurate and natural content to target text readers,which is reflected in case studies part.On the one hand,the translation project helps these who are not able to read the original works but interested in the state affairs to know South China Sea disputes and to boost their patriotism.On the other hand,the translator expects to offer a comparative perfect translation and reference to some Chinese organizations studying in reports of CSIS.And it is the translator's hope that the translation report is beneficial to enriching translation study of such political text.
