Chen Pai-sha once said he ‘likes green mountain rather than write a book",so he left nothing books.Almost all his works were collected by his students,especially his poems.From those poems,we could see his pathos and ethos.He had both Taoist and Confucian aspirations,and his personality undoubtedly integrated the characteristics of Confucianism and Taoism.On the one hand,he had Taoist spirit.Behind such a spirit,it could not be ignored that the geographical factors of Lingnan area(a dual characteristic of both seal and open)and cultural accumulation(a dual characteristic of both conservatism and innovative)had corresponding influences on him.Taoist ideas leaded him to live a natural life,he gave up imperial examination but chose to return his hometown.And he also emphasized follow the laws of nature when study.In addition,Chen Pai-sha lived his life as artfully as he wished,he was both good at calligraphy and Guqin.On the other hand,he also had a typical Confucian pursuit of a learning both sound in theory and practice.In theory,he breaks Zhu Xi's barriers and inspires Wang Yangming.In practice,he had a noble quality,so he never greed for money and filial his mother.He was also a typical loyalist patriot of feudal times,even sympathized with the common people.As mentioned above,Chen Pai-sha had a unique intellectual personality,his pathos and ethos showed an integration of Confucianism and Daoism.So he had many identities such as hermit,intellectual,educator and even sage.In the end,the creation of his intellectual personality was inseparable from the spirit of the Times.Ming dynasty was a tightly controlled dynasty in the history of China,and the scholars of the Ming dynasty became more deferential to the imperial power.Chen Pai-sha also pursued his official career four times but finally gave up,his rest life was independent from the mainstream society and dedicated to education.As a scholar in the Ming dynasty,though they had so much in common,there were his own uniqueness,Chen Pai-sha eventually realized his ‘true life'.Up to this day,he also had a certain promoting effect on the realization of our poetic dwelling.
