Abstract:Ethos of scholars is a mirror of the era, which could show a scholar of spirit and behavior. The scholars in Song Dynasty were fond of civil administration and strong subjective consciousness. Similar with the later change of North Song Dynasty, the ethos of scholars showed the era features. Yongjia Shigong school representative Ye Shi had some comments about it. Further more, he proposed the ideal ethos of scholars and the thoughts on ethos of scholars which could guide the folk custom.In specific, Ye Shi criticized the core issues such as public-private partnerships, learning, and virtual in Southern Song dynasty. On the basis of self-reflection, he thought purification on ethos of scholars should begin with shaping the ideal scholars. Then shaping the ideal ethos of scholars as follows:applying what they have learned, putting public interests ahead of personal interests, balancing the interests and justice. Finally, with the help of moral practice, the ethos of scholars could guide the folk custom which can promote social liberal progress. Further study on Ye Shi’s view about ethos of scholars could help us better understand the thoughts of Yongjia School and Ye Shi’s view.
