| The textual research of NOT A NOT B,a phrase structure in Chinese language,could date back to the Pre-Qin period when it can generally be generalized into such two types as Parallel Structures and Modifier-core Structures based on the internal structure.Those two relational structures not only share similarity but also exist differences in terms of formal description and functional interpretation,which seem like two parallel orbits guiding the phrase structure NOT A NOT B with constant evolution and development in the Pre-Qin period,a dynastic history.Guided by the research methods of three dimensional Grammatical Theory and based on the authenticity of corpus in the Pre-Qin Period,the dissertation firstly makes a multifaceted description and analysis towards Parallel Structures and Modifier-core Structures pertaining to the phrase structure,NOT A NOT B,in Pre-Qin Chinese.Subsequently,from the research perspective of functional grammar,those two structural forms are contrasted and analyzed.Under the influence of the phrase structure,NOT A NOT Bfor Parallel Structures,the embedded components,A and B,have prominent characteristics provided with descriptive meaning in nature.In the aspects of syntactic function,such negative items as NOT A and NOT B are mainly manifested in a form of predictive function.The differences of semantics of format could be basically categorized into three types that are Superposition Negation,Alternative Negation and Proliferation Negation.Meanwhile,the semantic relation of embedded components,A and B,exerts a profound influence on the formation of those three types of semantics of format.The prominent function of the natural focus and contrastive focus seems like the pragmatic function when the message is delivered through the phrase structure,NOT A NOT Bfor Parallel Structures.Discrete Form,Contracted Form,Successive Form and the Form of Similarities and Differences between Subjects are the classification basis for the phrase structure,NOT A NOT Bfor Modifier-core Structures on the surface of layer.Influenced by the logical relationship of negative items,NOT A and NOT B,the semantic relation of this phrase structure are reflected as such four relations as Conditional Relation,Causal Relation,Adversative Relation and Concession.Because of the differences,the phrase structure,NOT A NOT Bfor Modifier-core Structures is manifested as three situations,which are Wish and Fictitious Hypothesis,Circumstances and Objective Necessity and Deduction and Turning Paradox,in terms of pragmatic values.Structural solidification and boundarization are the common character of two structural formats of the phrase structure,NOT A NOT B in Pre-Qin Chinese in the process of evolution,which could be showed as Discrete Form,Targeted Contracted Form and Contracted Form.In the meantime,two structural formats of NOT A NOT B also exist differences in terms of cognitive prominence and sequence of format grades.With regard to cognitive prominence,the Parallel Structures lays an emphasis on result while Modifier-core Structures on the process.As for sequence of format grades,there are Parallel Structures Discrete Form,Modifier-core Structures Discrete Form,Parallel Structures Contracted Form and Modifier-core Structures Contracted Form. |
