The Obon festival and the Qingming and Cold Food Festival constitute the three traditional Chinese festival of sacrificial offering.Every year on July 15 th,Buddhism is called the Bon Festival, and Taoism is called the Mid-Yuan Festival.Folks also worship their ancestors on this day,so they are also called ghost festivals. The diversity of names highlights the triple cultural background of Confucianism,Buddhism and Taoism.Under the multi-cultural background, the Bon Festival was prevalent in the Tang and Song Dynasties. This article attempts to explore the religious origin, the reasons for the spread, the development and the culture connotation of the festival. This paper examines the origin of the semantics of the"Yulanpen(???)"and the authenticity of Yulanpen Jing(??????),and discusses the existence of a certain relationship between the concept and ritual of the Festival and Indian Buddhism. But the time of the festival and the culture of“filial piety”comes from China, and its source has nothing to do with Taoism. At the same time,in the context of Chinese traditional culture and Buddhism,we explore the reasons why the Bon Festival was prevalent in the Tang and Song dynasties.Among them, ancestral worship is the psychological foundation of festival inheritance. The dissemination of the concept of Buddhist hell has also become a propelling force for festival communication. However, the orientation of religion by rulers and social elites not only guides the value judgment of the people, but also has an influences on the people's holiday choices. In addition, the Bon Festival experienced the development of the Tang and Song Dynasties. Its religious color has been gradually weakened, and gradually becam a part of ancient age-old festivals.Including festive places, objects of sacrifice and cultural connotations have changed.Although there are economic factors influencing them, people's transformation in accordance with traditional sacrificial habits can't be ignored. Finally, the people as the main participants of the Bon Festival, their beliefs and actions reflect the festival's rich cultural connotation. The vague worship, the fear of hell, the joy of the holiday constitute the multicultural color of Obon festival.
