In recent years,China has been building its soft power from individual to society then to the whole country through education,cultural cultivation and publicity.The museums,as a cultural institution enriched with historical and cultural resources of the country,bears the responsibility of providing knowledge,appreciation and cultural education to the public.One way of doing so is by exhibitions.Whether the exhibition is successful or not is an important criterion to measure the social value of museums.Exhibition design is a necessary means to effectively display and disseminate exhibition information.However,many issues still exist during the exhibitions such as impersonal signs like "do not touch",uncommon words used in the introductions and tedious exhibition forms.All these happened because the designer failed to understand that the exhibition design itself is also a way of communicating with the public thus did not form the "people-oriented" design concept.This paper,therefore is trying to find the best option possible when it comes to exhibition design in museums that most effectively publicises the information by discussing the communication theories and pointing out the key points of publicising information as well as the constraints.The first part of the thesis is the introduction of the background and the significance of this paper.The second part is the definitions of the concepts used in this thesis to avoid any conceptual misunderstandings,while explaining the importance of communication theory in exhibition design.The third part is the generalised analysis and understanding of the process of information dissemination in museum exhibitions using the basics of communication theory,and to draw the model of information dissemination process.Meanwhile,different media of disseminating the exhibition information are being introduced and classified according to the theory of communication.This part is the theoretical guideline for real life design concepts.In the fourth part,by analysing effective forms of information dissemination and the actual cases,this paper provides a referenceable theory for the discussion of the design methods which are proposed in the fifth part.Last but not least,the fifth part recognises the important role different media play in the information dissemination process,and discusses the most effective design methods based on the characteristics of different media.Finally,it is the hope that this paper can provide a supplementary theoretical support for the development of the current exhibition design.
