Contemporary art is flourishing at home and abroad in the background of art globalization.China has took part in La Biennale di Venezia which is one of the most important international art exhibitions for 7 times. But from the time when China first took part in,Chinese art was under a cloud of controversy. Can the Chinese Characteristics China insisted on in the exhibitions before carry forward Chinese traditional culture? Is the dilemma caused by the utilization of material or the conceptions of works? This paper attempts to classify local culture and regional characteristics into one category of cultural symbols, and use symbolic knowledge to analyze the meaning and existence of cultural symbols in the field of art.Although different countries have different cultural backgrounds and characteristic, they have many resemblances as cultural symbols. It is a double-edged sword to use cultural symbols in the contemporary Chinese art.In order to enhance the cultural identity and national confidence,we will deepen our understanding of the aesthetic culture and image of the nation and achieve the purpose of providing reference for the exploration and practice of the creation of national culture. The purpose of this study is not only to explore how can we explore our traditional culture, but also to put the principle of semiotics into practice. The relationship between the sign and the object indicates the interpretation of the object.Cultural symbols can reflect a cultural area or group which is different from other regional groups of cultural characteristics. The meaning of the symbol can be transferred and extended.A combination of multiple symbols can be a single unit of meaning as a text. This theory laid the foundation for the utilization of cultural symbols in contemporary art.In this comparison of the special works of the Venice Biennale,it can be found that both the Brazilian artist Ernesto Netto's work A Sacred Place or theJapanese artist Iwasaki Takao's work Upside down is a Forest,or the Chinese works in the name of Endless which was with a strong cultural color.effect of their expression is different though all of those works used the way of cultural symbols utilization. In summary, diversing cultural symbols and transforming meanings are necessary to make the utilization of cultural symbols meaningful.
