On The Translation Of Chinese Culture In Folding Beijing From The Perspective Of Hybridity Theory

This thesis analyzed the translation of Chinese culture in Folding Beijing from the perspective of Homi Bhabha's hybridity theory.This post-colonialist theory focuses on the relationship between strong culture and weak culture.Between cultures,there is a“third space”where strong culture and weak culture can negotiate with each other.In this globalized world,with the differences between cultures become fussier,this“third space”is where mediation between cultures happens,letting every unique language tradition and text acquire their living space and create new meaning.Hybridity in translation can play a very important role in deconstructing the binary opposition between strong and weak cultures.It stresses that foreignizing and domesticating strategies should be adopted to maintain the hybridity of translation.In order to maintain cultural diversity and protect the weak culture,the foreignizing strategy should play a more important role in translation than the domesticating one.Folding Beijing has received the acceptance and welcome of Western readers and won the 74^th Hugo Award for Best Novelette.Liu's good translation,especially of Chinese culture contributed greatly to its success.Through proper hybridity,Liu presented Chinese culture to Western readers and catered to their reading habits.This thesis studied Liu's choice of domestication and foreignization at the linguistic and cultural levels.Most of the lexical elements were translated in a foreignizing way.Despite the great syntactic differences between the two languages,many sentences were also translated in a foreignizing way in order to show the features of Chinese language.In the meantime,most of the cultural elements including food,society and material were translated by foreignizing while some were dealt with by domesticating in order to cater to the taste of target readers or were impossible to be translated through foreignization.The successful translation of Folding Beijing has gained the book a high degree of acceptability in the West.Chinese culture was presented to Western readers,exerting subtle influence on them.The translation as well the translating thinking is of great significance to other Chinese-to-English translators,to the development and spread of Chinese literature especially Chinese SF and Chinese culture going global.
