On The Relationship Of Beauty And Goodness In The Personality Aesthetics Of Mencius

The relationship of beauty and goodness is a very important issue in the Pre-Qin Confucian Aesthetics.Mencius inherited Confucius' s thoughts of beauty and goodness,further developed the connotation of beauty and goodness.The core discussion of relationship between beauty and goodness of Mencius focused on the statement that “Need is goodness,individual personality is real,fullness is beauty”,which was raised when talked about the personality problems.In essence,this statement was also based on the general description of relationship between beauty and goodness which is so-called unity of beauty and goodness.Since the statement was raised on the perspective of personality,some problems have arised.Based on the text of Meng Zi,this paper tries to discuss the relationship between beauty and goodness from the perspective of the Gentleman Personality and here come 3 key problems: first,the reason why beauty and goodness could be combined in the Gentleman Personality;second,the concrete expression of the unity of beauty and goodness in the Gentleman Personality;third,the ultimate goal of the unity of beauty and goodness.The whole article includes three parts.In the first chapter,the reason why beauty and goodness could be combined in the Gentleman Personality would be discussed from the theory of original goodness of human nature,which is the ethical principle of Gentleman Personality.In the second chapter,an interpretation of connation of the aesthetic connation and aesthetic transcendence of Gentleman Personality would be made from the aspect of dual realm of the Gentleman Personality to discuss the concrete expression of the unity of beauty and goodness.In the third chapter,the Confucian realm of life which is the unity of beauty and goodness pointed to would be discussed,the realm of life is Gentleman Personality' s ultimate goal,which focused on the key word of “Yue” that connecting beauty and goodness.Gentleman Personality could get the biggest happiness through the way of sincerity and and the state of biggest happiness of life also reveals the character of Confucian aesthetics which is called the beauty of harmony.
