Marguerite Duras is a famous and legendary female writer in the French literary.She has a wide range of works,including novels,plays,and essays and so on.In 1984,Duras won the highest prize in French literature,the Goncourt Literary Prize,for The Lover,and became a worldwide renowned writer.For a white woman writer who spent her childhood on an eastern colony,and only went back to the suzerain in her teens,the transformation between different space and the experience of space are of great significance for Duras.The discussion of the meaning and reference of garden,an image which is both common and representative,can provides us a better understanding of Duras' s works and Duras herself.In the process of the discussion of garden image,one can observe Duras' s mental process during her writing and her hidden colonial consciousness,so that one can truly understand the profound implication that Duras wanted to convey.The thesis consists of three parts: introduction,main body and conclusion.The first part introduces Marguerite Duras and her works with the focus on the academic and research status quo of Duras' s works home and abroad,as well as the elaboration on the necessity and academic value of the garden image research.The main body is divided into three chapters.The first chapter is a text analysis of garden image in Duras' s works.Three typical kinds of garden image will be discussed,which are garden as the power of colony,female world and the reveal of loneness and freedom,and their profound connotation.The second chapter combines Duras' s unique growth experience and dual cultural background to explore the causes of the formation of garden image in her works,which mainly focuses on the aspects of the acquaintance,the building and the integration of garden.The third chapter probes into the garden image from the perspective of the change of western culture.The origin and development of the western garden image will be analyzed in this chapter,discussing Duras' s inherence and change of the traditional garden image in western literature,as well as the meaning and academic value of the garden image in Duras' s works.
