In the French literary world of the twentieth century,the female writer Marguerite Duras is a unique existence.Her childhood spent in French Indo-China is an inexhaustible treasure of inspiration for her books.There is never shortage of the depiction of the East in western literature.Through the early imagination of the East,travels and works that depict eastern colonies,it is obvious to find out that for western writers,the East is an area of mystery.Born in the East,Duras has much personal experience of the real eastern world and is best qualified to speak on this issue.The thesis discussed the works of Duras concerning the East and explored the significance and uniqueness of eastern narratives of Duras.Moreover,the thesis analyzed the influence of her identity that is the fusion of the characteristics of both the East and the West on her literary creation.Furthermore,the thesis explored the reasons why Duras could establish and make a name for herself in both the French and European literary world.The thesis consisted of four chapters.Chapter one introduced the childhood of Duras that was spent in the East and the works of Duras concerning the East based on her childhood memory.The second chapter made comparison of the works of Duras concerning the East and other works of similar themes such as travels of Marco Polo,operas of Giacomo Puccini and works about the East in the colonial period.This chapter intended to point out that Duras viewed the East in the light that is between racial and nonracial.Therefore,works of Duras are unique among those in the colonial period.Chapter three pointed out the influence that the experience in the East has exerted on the literary creation of Duras through text analysis and analysis of the psychology of creation.This chapter also discussed fiction making,which is the most common technique in her literary creation concerning the East.The fourth chapter conducted the analysis of the cultural identity of Duras,which is the fusion of the features of the East and West.In addition,this chapter analyzed and pointed out from the analysis of her personality the secrets for Duras to stand out in the colorful French literary world of the twentieth century.
