Discourse Analysis Of 2017 UABB Art Intervention On Nantou Historical City

Art Biennale originated in Venice and has a history of more than 100 years.In the development of the biennale,it has not only the content of contemporary art,but also the urban and architectural content.The Bi-city Biennale of Urbanism\Architecture(herein referred to as “UABB”)is a biennale devoted to the theme of urban and architecture.UABB was first held in 2005.It has a history of 12 years and has been successfully held for six times.The seventh UABB has also officially opened on December 15,2017.Since its first beginning,UABB has never chosen a fixed exhibition site as venue,but has always transformed its exhibition space and activated its exhibition site.2017 UABB did not use the previous two general industrial relics as its main venue.Instead,it chose Nantou Historical City,an urban village,and reconstructed it.Therefore,2017 UABB actually engaged in art intervention on an urban village in the form of a biennale.This article uses participatory observation,content analysis,in-depth interviews,and discourse analysis to conduct the discourse analysis on UABB and its intervention on the visual space of Nantou Historical City.Three different aspects of discourse production,discourse presentation and discourse reception were analyzed to provide an evaluation basis for exploring the effects and influence of UABB art intervention on Nantou Historical City.First,for discourse production,this article clarifies different entities involved in the process of UABB,including government agencies,sponsoring support agencies,curator and exhibitors.This article also clarifies the specific operation model of UABB.At the same time,the article analyzes the change of the media image of Nantou Historical City caused by the discourse production of mainstream media.Secondly,for discourse presentation,this article analyzes the exhibition technology,description of the exhibits' text,and the transformation of the exhibition hall.Thirdly,for discourse reception,this article describes the different types of audience viewing methods and analyzes how different viewers construct the viewing discourse of UABB from the perspective of audience self-media.Through the analysis,the following conclusions are drawn: First,in the process of discourse production,government discourse dominates and influences the production ofUABB discourse through the selection of exhibition theme and venue,and the examination of the contents of exhibits.In particular,in the government discourse,it is largely hopes that2017 UABB is in line with the mainstream thinking,there is no sensitive topic,and the contents are harmonious and safe,so that people can understand the knowledge of urban and architecture,and can also draw attention to the urban village.Second,there are some differences in the process of discourse presentation.In addition to the attention paid to the topics of urban village and city,the technical aspects of the exhibition also presented the possibility of showing off new technology.In the aspect of exhibits,it reflects the focus on the six major themes and the consideration of globality as comparison and locality as the focus.In the aspect of building reconstruction,on the one hand,it has a reflection on the lack of public space.On the other hand,business discourse influence the reconstruction.Third,in terms of discourse reception,the residents' discourse in the Nantou Historical City is missing.The professional audience and the non-professional audience have different understanding of the UABB.Professional audience tends to shape the UABB into a professional venue that they can learn the knowledge of urban and architecture,urban village problems,and contemporary art.The non-professional audience tends to shape the UABB into a tourist attraction which is suitable for taking pictures.Fourth,in media discourse production,before and after the UABB intervention,the reports of mainstream media are different and this change the image of the Nantou Historical City.Before UABB intervention,he reporting discourse was relatively ordinary and neutral and focused on many public problems in Nantou Historical City and the image of the historical city that was often included in the government's work agenda.After the UABB intervention,UABB or Nantou Historical City is positively reported and emphasized Nantou Historical City as the image of urban village as a venue for art and cultural events,like biennale.Fifth,due to the missing of residents' discourse and the ignorance of audiences' acceptance of UABB and Nantou Historical City,the art intervention on Nantou Historical City is more like carnival which under the influence of government and media reports.It is not necessarily optimistic whether the effect of art intervention will have a sustained and real impact on the Nantou Historical City or urban village problem.
