As a world language,English has been widely used.It is relatively early in China that English has been taught as a curriculum.National English Curriculum Standards(NECS,2011)stresses the importance of vocabulary spelling and word reading in primary schools and it also points out that pupils in grade three must be able to read simple English words according to the rules of phonetic. But the traditional method of vocabulary teaching is not conducive to establish the relationship between words and sounds, and it is even more difficult for students to learn and memorize English words. Therefore, the spelling, reading and memory of words have become the most difficult problems for students. It requires teachers to do more to improve the effectiveness of English vocabulary teaching. In view of this, this research applies phonics to the third grade students in vocabulary spelling and reading so that students can recognize the correspondence between letters and letter combinations with phonemes. Then students can make use of this regulation to learn English in order to improve students' interest in learning English. This study used the method of empirical research to compare the different effect of phonics and traditional vocabulary teaching method through pretest and post-test.The author selected 90 pupils of third grade which from a primary school of Ordos. The author also choose two parallel classes as the experimental group and the control group for a semester experimental study. The research questions of this study are as follows:1)Can phonics teaching improve vocabulary spelling ability of grade three students in primary schools ?2)Can phonics teaching improve ability of reading aloud of grade three students in primary schools ?From the result of pretest and post-test of vocabulary spelling and vocabulary reading, this study presented the following findings: First, the two groups have made progress in vocabulary learning after the experiment, but the experimental group has made more progress than the control group. The pupils in the experimental group can spell words accurately and quickly.Second, pupils in the experimental group can spell out strange words while pupils in the control group cannot after the experiment. The inspiration of this study to teaching is that students in third grade are active and curious. Therefore, teachers should avoid to use traditional teaching methods just like recite words and articles to teach English vocabulary.Teachers can use phonics through some entertaining methods to expand students' vocabulary. Also they should create a situation that is close to the student's real life so that students can use the vocabulary in a comprehensive way in order to give them a confident psychological atmosphere and a sense of accomplishment.
