Vocabulary teaching is the focus of English teaching in primary school.It is also an important part of English learning.However,in the current teaching process,vocabulary is also the biggest problem facing by both teachers and students.Vocabulary involves a wide range of contents and a large amount of knowledge.Many students have difficulty in the pronunciation.Some students even mark in Chinese,which seriously affects the pronunciation of words.In the word spelling,the students can not grasp the relations between pronunciation and spelling.English textbooks are set in a modular mode,with few connections between units,so it is difficult to achieve the consolidation.And the teachers' method is simple,divorced from the actual language situation.Facing with the current situation of English vocabulary teaching,it is urgent for teachers to change their teaching methods.The New Curriculum Standard calls for the change of “traditional three centers” to “new three centers”,which requires teachers to adapt classroom teaching to be intuitive and vivid.James Asher proposed the Total Physical Response(TPR).The method is to teach language through body movements,so that students take listening comprehension as the first step and link language with action.This kind of teaching conforms to the law of language learning.From the student's point of view,it promotes the division of labor between the left and right brain of learners,helping students create a language environment in an interesting learning environment.It improves teachers' teaching ability,thus bringing about good teaching results.The primary school English teaching aims to cultivate students' interest in language learning through various activities.TPR just meets the teaching requirements.Scholars at home and abroad have done a lot of researches on TPR teaching both theoretically and practically,but there are few empirical studies on TPR in primary school English vocabulary teaching.Therefore,this paper investigates and studies the application of the TPR method in English vocabulary teaching of primary schools,trying to improve the teaching effect by applying TPR teaching method in English vocabulary teaching of primary schools.This paper expounds the theory of TPR and its theoretical development.It analyzes the current situation of primary school English vocabulary teaching,and sorts out the literature related to TPR and vocabulary teaching at home and abroad through literature method.TPR teaching method is applied in the English vocabulary teaching in Primary School.To investigate the cognition of English vocabulary teaching attitudes,interests and effects,the questionnaire carries out in March 2018.The TPR is used in the experimental class to teach words.After 16 weeks of teaching experiment,the survey data shows that the number of students who are interested in English vocabulary learning increases,indicating that TPR has an impact on primary school students' interest in English vocabulary learning.After the TPR teaching method is adopted in the experimental class,the average score has improved.While the control class adopts the traditional teaching method,the data shows that the change is not obvious.Through the analysis of experimental data,the following conclusions are drawn in this study:1)Students' interest and attitude have changed after TPR teaching.TPR can improve their interest in English vocabulary learning.2)Compared with the traditional teaching method,TPR teaching method has more advantages.It can reduce the pressure in English vocabulary learning.Students can learn in a relaxed and happy environment,by attracting the students' attention to encourage them to participate in the learning.The author hopes that this study can provide theoretical enlightenment to the primary school English teachers.In the teaching practice,the education department will give the teachers professional training of TPR teaching,and the teachers will dare to innovate in their own practice.It is hoped that more primary school teachers can devote themselves to TPR teaching and contribute to the improvement of TPR teaching methods.
