As a teaching method,multi-modal PPT teaching has been used in primary and secondary schools for many years.This teaching method draws lessons from the theory of multi-modal discourse analysis.Multi-modal discourse analysis analyses many symbolic systems,such as text,image,sound,and video.It is based on systemic functional linguistics and provides theoretical support for foreign language teaching.The use of media technology can enable learners to receive multiple information at the same time,thus making learning more relevant to real life,especially in English learning.Multi-modal PPT courseware can set text,picture,sound,video,animation into one slide,with diversity,integration and other characteristics,making classroom teaching more colorful.The National English Curriculum Standard of Senior High School(2011)clearly points out that the teaching of English in senior high school should take full advantage of modern technology to broaden the channels of learning and using English.But there are still existing many problems in the making and using of PPT courseware in senior high school English teaching,such as,simplicity of modality,limitation of teachers' technology level of PPT,lack of interaction between teachers and students in the teaching process.As a result,the quality of teaching is affected to a certain extent.So,many educators are concernedabout how to maximize the advantages of multimodal PPT courseware,avoid the disadvantages of multi-modal PPT courseware,and improve the quality of English teaching.The thesis is based on the multi-modal discourse analysis theory,input hypothesis and cognitive load theory.The main research questions include(1)what is the Status quo of multi-modal PPT in senior high school English teaching?(2)What are the influences of the multi-modal PPT on the student participation?(3)What is the impact of the application of the multi-modal PPT on students' scores? This research collects 30 PPT slides,a total of 1200 pages,from three English teachers of Grade One from Affiliated Middle School to Inner Mongolia Normal University in Hohhot,and data are collected by means of questionnaires,including 30 teachers' questionnaires and 200 students' questionnaires,interviews,including an interview for nine students and an interview for three teachers,classroom observation and scores of two classes in the monthly,midterm,final exam.The result of the data analysis shows that multi-modal PPT has a lot of advantages such as a clear presentation and convenient operation.On the whole,the teachers hold the positive attitude towards the application of multi-modal PPT.Text mode and picture mode are the two commonly used modes to express meaning.But the ideal PPT courseware in the teacher's mind is to set text,picture,video,audio,animation in one multimodal PPT courseware.As for the students,audio mode and video mode are their favoritemodes.However,due to the limitation of designing time and computer skills,there are still some deficiencies in PPT.For instance,inappropriate modes distract the students' attention,overuse of text and inharmonious collocation of colors not only make a poor page layout,but also make students tired of PPT and there is less interactivity between teachers and students.Multi-modal PPT courseware plays an active role in students' classroom participation.On the behavior participation level,the students are more easily integrated into the classroom.On the cognitive level,the multi-modal PPT teaching model can help students connect language knowledge with real life,enable them to construct knowledge independently.On the emotional level,multi-modal PPT courseware can improve students' interest in English learning and make students feel a sense of achievement.The research has showed that the multi-modal PPT with high quality has a positive effect on students' scores.Meanwhile,if the multi-modal consciousness of teachers is strong enough to construct a multimodal class,a relaxed learning atmosphere can be created,students' interest in learning can be stimulated,their knowledge scope can be broadened,and scores can be improved.In the end,some corresponding suggestions on making and using multimodal PPT are put forward.
