A Study On C-E Translation Of Historical Museum Texts From The Visitor-friendly Perspective

Museum texts are of great importance for visitors to communicate with museums.However,for the past decade,visitors to museums have transferred from scholars and experts to a diverse group of people,and an increasing number of international visitors tend to go to museums to learn the history and culture of a destination.Therefore,demand for visitor-oriented translation of museum texts is on a rise to meet international visitors' requirements.This research works on museum texts collected in seven museums and other temporary exhibitions.The thesis analyzes language features of different kinds of museum texts given the specific reading environment of each of them,and then examines the linguistic and nonlinguistic problems in C-E translation of museum texts from the visitor-friendly perspective.Then,under the guidance of text type theory,the thesis proposes translation methods and techniques aiming at different kinds of museum.To fully realize the informative function of museum text translation,the thesis proposes three methods including restructure of information,observation of real objects,and reference to parallel texts to make the target texts information reasonable for visitors;to achieve the expressive function,the thesis describes two aspects including convert of unfamiliar information and equivalence of the context,which should be noticed in order to make the target texts more of a museum attraction to visitors;to accomplish the operative function,the thesis mentions three aspects including improvement on readability,expression of culture-specific content,and formats of presenting information,which can be helpful for visitors to learn about what does a museum expect them to do and not to do in it.Detail techniques of each method or aspect are provided with examples.
