In recent years, the international transmission of Chinese culture has gained greater momentum. The “Translation Project of Chinese Humanities and Social Sciences Academic Boutique” is known as one of the typical approaches to make Chinese culture go global. On the basis of the C-E translation of the book A Mythological Approach to Exploring the Origins of Chinese Civilization, which was funded by the National Social Science Foundation as one of the 2016 Translation Project of Chinese Humanities and Social Sciences Academic Boutiques, this thesis aims to explore the specific compensation strategies of culture-specific items encountered in the book, with the help of George Steiner's fourfold hermeneutic motion theory: trust, aggression, incorporation, and compensation.By building a small corpus for culture-specific items in the book,culture-specific items are collected and analyzed to summarize their characteristics and classifications.Furthermore, difficulties like complete cultural blank and partial cultural blank embodied in the material, social and linguistic culture-specific items are further identified. To compensate for such translation losses caused by complete cultural blank and partial cultural blank, compensation strategies and methods respectively at linguistic level, cultural level and aesthetic level are adopted to achieve the fusion of horizons between the source text and the target text, with the hope to better convey the rich cultural connotations of culture-specific items and provide references for the translation of culture-specific items in the similar academic and literature translation projects.
