XISU Guestroom is an English interview program designed and organized by the Office of Academic Affairs of Xi'an International Studies University(XISU).In September 2016,Charles Bazerman,a world-renowned expert on teaching of writing was invited to this program and had an interview with another professors from XISU.The topic of this interview is Academic Writing in American Universities.This time,the interview was recorded by the Center for Information Technology of XISU.Then,the video was given to the author of this report to do subtitle translation for it.Subtitle translation is a purposeful activity,mainly to convey the information of the video,which makes it easy for the audience in specific living environment to understand.Every subtitle translation has its specific purpose,therefore,subtitle translation should follow certain principles and adopt the appropriate translation strategies and translation methods.This report is formed from the Functionalist Translation Theory as the guide to study the subtitle translation of Academic Writing in American Universities.It aims to summarize the difficulties in the translation process and find out proper solutions by functionalist approach.Then,the author proposes subtitle translation principles,strategies and methods for interview programs,hoping that this report could offer some help for future subtitle translation research and practice.
