Workers,as a group with extremely realistic meanings and a model of the times,their screen image changing with the developing society embodies the disadvantages and innovations of Chinese society.The shaping of workers' screen image must be closely linked with the development of the times and the social context.The workers' image has shown the characteristics of the times corresponding to each specific historical period,and has become an indispensable "barometer" for social reflection and cultural criticism.The mainland's independent documentary film,which was born in the late 1980 s,provides us with a new viewing perspective and expression way in the shaping and portraying of workers' images.It has extraordinary significance in the construction of workers' images in the film history.This article discusses the image of workers in the category of independent documentaries in mainland China.It starts with the traditional workers and new workers,and analyzes related video works and systematically elaborates the writing process of workers in the independent documentaries in mainland China.The first chapter mainly clarifies the concept of mainland independent documentary,and through the changes of the definition of workers in different historical periods,analyzes the status and group characteristics of workers in different social forms.Chapters Two and Three are the focus of the paper.They combine the detailed text-reading of specific films,analyze the disintegration and aphasia of traditional workers' groups and the overall collapse of traditional industrial civilization.These two chapters also explore the significance of the ruin narrative in urban space in reflecting the entire working class and the embarrassing situation of the emerging migrant workers involved in the tide of urbanization.The fourth chapter describes the underlying fate of the entire worker group transformed from autonomous people to tame people in the bottom strata.This article aims to discuss the social significance and cultural value of the workers constructed by independent documentaries in the film history.
