Sleep deprivation impairs cognitive performance and leads to brain dysfunction, but a frameworks investigating the impact of sleep deprivation still remain to be explored. In study 1,we performed multiple neuroimaging and behavioral meta-analyses attempting to generate a comprehensive and systematic characterization of the effects of sleep deprivation on task-state brain. With respect to behavioral phenotype, sleep deprivation exerted a negative impact on numerous cognitive functions, especially attention and memory. With respect to neural activity, sleep deprivation attenuated taskstate brain activation mainly in the visual, dorsal, and ventral attention networks, while activity enhancement was observed principally in subcortical structures, such as the thalamus and putamen. Moreover, sleep deprivation impacts global brain networks, rather than merely have an effect on specific regions. The results partly supported the related reductionism theories of sleep deprivation, such as vigilance and attention theories, but in the meanwhile, suggested that the impact of sleep deprivation does not confine certain region or basic cognitive function.Enlightened by the study 1,we utilized a pretty complex cognitive task(permute rules task)to investigate whether(1)sleep deprivation differently influence the simple and task cognitive task performance;(2)vigilance and attention would mainly interpret the impact of sleep deprivation on the two types cognitive task. The results revealed that(1)sleep deprivation only lowed the reaction speed of simple cognitive task, not accuracy, and which did not change the task activation and connectome. This result indicating that practice could effectively mediate the detrimental impact of sleep deprivation;(2)sleep deprivation decreased the behavioral performance of complex cognitive task both in reaction speed and accuracy, through changing the task connectome, not activation. The result suggest that sleep deprivation restrain the learn efficiency by change the processing strategy from fast learning processing to extracting retrofit;(3)after regressing the effect of vigilance and execution control,we still found that sleep deprivation restrains complex cognitive performance. These results imply that the sleep deprivation not only disturb the basic cognitive component, also change the way of brain information process. The two study revisit the neuroimaging studies and used a new recently developed paradigm to renovate the understanding of how sleep deprivation change the cognition and brain function.
