On Style Reproduction Of Allegorical Fiction

Nineteen Eighty-Four written by George Orwell is one of the most famous political and allegorical fictions in the world,and it is featured by dystopia and anti-totalitarianism.The fiction is a prophecy of the extreme development of totalitarianism,humanity being suppressed,freedom being rid of,thought being controlled and people's lives being impoverished.The way of telling tales in allegorical fiction definitely varies from that of other kinds of fictions.For example,the choices of words,rhetorical devices and syntactic patterns of allegorical fiction are very distinctive and they are the features of style.Style is always a hotspot issue in the academic circle and the translatability of style has long been a heated topic among translators and translation theorists.By virtue of Markedness Theory,there will be a new insight into the research of the translatability of style.Nineteen Eighty-Four has the features of allegorical fiction,such as neologism,metaphor,irony,etc.which are marked.The author has adopted and simplified the PMEP proposed by Prof.Hou Guojin,and conducted a research on the main features of allegorical style of Nineteen Eighty-Four and the aesthetic effect at lexical,syntactic and rhetorical levels so as to offer new ideas and strategies for allegorical fiction translation.The dissertation is divided into five chapters.Chapter One introduces the research background,purpose,meaning,methodology and structure.Chapter Two is an important review of style research at home and abroad.Chapter Three is a systematic introduction to the theoretical framework of this dissertation.Chapter Four conducts a comparative study of the three translations in terms of relevance degree and U/M terms at three levels.Chapter Five is the conclusion,limitations and suggestions of the dissertation.Judging from the comparative study,there are some unsatisfying translations,resulting from the fact that translators neglected the marked values of allegorical style.Thus,this dissertation concludes that under the guidance of Markedness Equivalence and according to features of allegorical style,translators are recommended to preserve the marked values in the TT by keeping the original images so as to adequately reproduce the marked values.
