This thesis makes an attempt to study the C-E translation skills of Chinese bounded linguistic structures.According to Cognitive Linguistics,a boundary or bounded entity(i.e.boundedness)is set in a given cognitive domain for the construal of a concept or an expression. To put it differently, all linguistic structures or entities are constructed with boundedness one way or another,or boun·dedness is supposedly pervasive in all languages, including in both Chinese and English. However, what linguistic cues or clues are needed to embody the same bounded entity differently in either Chinese or English is still a challenge for most Chinese EFL learners for the time being. To answer this question, the following two steps are indispensably included for a solution. The semantic properties of bounded linguistic structures are first characterized in terms of quantifiers, adverbials of places or frequency, definite language structures, tense and aspect and contexts. Then a contrastive study between Chinese and English bounded linguistic structures is conducted. On the basis of Cognitive Linguistics, one hypothesis is formulated that there may be structural differences between Chinese and English bounded linguistic structures.By studying the related literature and many examples, this hypothesis has been confirmed.Chinese and English bounded linguistic structures are different in terms of both construction and syntactic position.Such differences are vital to the embodiment of a bounded structure. This thesis mainly focuses on the subtle semantic differences derived from different constructions and syntactic positions and develops 7 Chinese-English translation skills of Chinese bounded linguistic structures from the macro perspective:(1)Positional Equivalence;(2)Positional Inequivalence;(3)Compensatory Equivalence;(4)Subjective Equivalence;(5)Gestalt Equivalence;(6)Keyword Equivalence and(7)Clause Equivalence. To recapitulate, this thesis has probed into 4 major bounded linguistic structures in both Chinese and English and aims at getting a better understanding of both the syntactic and the semantic properties of Chinese bounded linguistic structures and the skills of translating them into English. It is hoped that this study will be beneficial to Cognitive Linguistics,English teaching & research, translation studies and the like.
