Li Changzhi is one of the most prestigious Chinese literary critics in the 1930s and 40s,especially famous for his systemic theories and unique methods. However, his status as a literary historian has long been ignored. In fact,he not only translated German literary history works and wrote essays to clarify his viewpoints on literary history, but also wrote a relatively complete literary history textbook, which made a great contribution to the study of Chinese literary history. In the early 1930s,he gradually applied the method of his spiritual history acquired from the writing of German literary history to the study of classical Chinese literature, and combed the clues of the spiritual history of classicalism and romanticism with national characteristics. The efforts to remould traditional culture through writing literary history are both the basis for reestablishing culture for modern Chinese people and a preliminary attempt to communicate with Western culture. Therefore, the "spiritual history" has become a key point in the study of Li Changzhi's literary history. In this paper, the "spiritual history" is acted as the core, and the process of the formation of Li Changzhi's concept of the spiritual history and the specific writing practice and the theoretical and practical significance of this literary history writing method are analyzed, thus summing up Li Changzhi's contribution to the study of Chinese literature history in the past 100 years. At the end of the paper, combined with the specific writing features of his "A Brief History of Chinese Literature",the typical symptoms of Li Changzhi's academic variation are analyzed,to bring the reflection on the pluralistic writing of contemporary literary history.
