The Mean is not only an important ethical virtue in Western traditional culture, but also a precious philosophical thought in Chinese traditional culture.Today, the concept of the Mean still has extensive and profound influence on the social development of China and the West.Comparing the Chinese and Western perspectives of the doctrine of the Mean can enable us to once again clarify the importance of this virtue and make good use of it to serve the current socialist construction with Chinese characteristics. This article takes the doctrine of the mean as the research object, takes the comparative study as the main means, uses the logic and the historical unification, the literature analysis and other methods, and deeply analyzes the mediocre view of Confucianism in the pre-Qin period and the ancient Greek philosophy.First of all,the concept of the Doctrine of the Doctrine of Confucianism in the pre-Qin period began in the era of the Yao and Shun Dynasty, was formed by the hands of Confucius, and was finally perfected by Zisi,Mencius,Xunzi. The doctrine of the doctrine contains three layers of meaning and four connotations. It is the highest moral standard and the universal methodological principle in the entire Confucian system. It is also a cosmic view of heaven and man.The mean is not only a value principle of traditional culture, but also a form of simple dialectic.Second, the concept of mediocrity in ancient Greek philosophy had already sprouted in Greek mythology, and was later exclaimed by Heraclitus and others, and eventually gathered in Aristotle.Aristotle's view of the doctrine of the mediocrity has important research value. It is not only the selection criterion of practical wisdom in Aristotle's philosophy, but also closely related to Aristotle's other doctrines. The concept of doctrine of the ancient Greek philosophy plays a very important role in stabilizing city-state politics, reconciling opposing ideas, and promoting social harmony.Thirdly,on the basis of respectively explaining the concept of the Mean of the Pre-Qin and ancient Greece, compare, analyze, and excavate the deep fit and contrast of the two concepts of the Mean in the formation of background,thought-provoking tendency, theoretical connotation and historical influence. Finally, through comparison with each other, the two short-term advantages and shortcomings of the mean are clearly defined, which provide ideological preconditions and theoretical support for the complementarity between the two in termsof philosophical categories, ethics, political ideas, and methodological principles. At the end of the article, the comparison between the two concepts of the Doctrine of the Mean, and the non-negligible theoretical value and practical role of contemporary society. There are two unique features of this article:First,on the basis of comprehensively grasping the Confucian concepts of the pre-Qin period and the ancient Greek philosophy, the authors conducted a comparative analysis of the two sides and formed three new research conclusions(see the article),revealing that similar studies in the country have not touched upon and have not been clear.Second,on the basis of comparing the short-term advantages and shortcomings of the two kinds of mean views, they put forward the complementary advantages of the two in the three aspects(see the article). This is also a place not covered in previous studies. This article makes up for this.In addition, there are several innovations in this article that show:First, the discourse on the status and role of the doctrine of the doctrine of the universe as a unity of heaven and man in Confucianism.Second, the discourse on the positioning of Mean as a value principle of traditional culture in the history of Chinese thought. All are from the own mind, but they are justified.
