In May,2015,the National Foreign Languages Teaching Advisory Board published the Guidelines on College English Teaching(exposure draft),which clearly emphasized humanistic features of college English programs.Harbin Institute of Technology(HIT)started a new round of reform on college English teaching against this backdrop.English Classics Recitation & Appreciation(ECRA)is one of the fruitful products in this reform,which incorporates cultural knowledge into language learning and applies various teaching strategies and technical tools.It has acquired extensive,positive feedback from both students and teachers.To better enhance its curriculum development,it is necessary to conduct a comprehensive curriculum evaluation on the ECRA program to find out its merits and demerits.This research is intended to evaluate the essential elements of the program,including its objectives,content,methods and technologies,to figure out(1)Have the objectives of the ECRA program been achieved?(2)Are the elements(such as its content,methods and techniques)of the ECRA program effective?(3)What aspects can be improved for future program development?This research consists of three stages,implementing triangulated instruments of classroom observation,questionnaire and face-to-face interview,providing a large amount of quantitative and qualitative data.Conclusions have been made based on the analysis of those data:(1)All three objectives of the ECRA program have been achieved,though the fulfillment level differs among them;(2)The rich content and various methods and techniques of the ECRA program prove to be effective.Several useful suggestions for future program development have also been brought up.In addition,this research makes the first attempt to introduce the Teacher Effectiveness for Language Learning(TELL)Framework into the curriculum evaluation on a specific program,which can help teachers conduct self-evaluation while they designing a program as well.
