Cooperative learning is first advocated and carried out by famous American educator David Koonts. It became a creative and effective teaching theory and strategy in 1970s and 1980s. Nowadays, cooperative learning has widely used in class teaching, but its formality still exists seriously. The main reason lies in the teachers themselves. Most teachers don't master the theory and techniques of cooperative learning and in their minds they think cooperative learning is just like the following: the teachers give students some discussion questions to answer in their class, students are all involved in it, then the teacher concludes their discussion results. That is cooperative learning. This is only a superficial cooperative learning, the real purpose and significance doesn't embody through students'learning.Today, Cooperative learning, as a breakthrough and complement to the traditional teaching, is increasingly adopted by creative teachers into in-class teaching by which is centered on the students. It is also a new learning strategy advocated in the Education Curriculum Reformation focused on learning autonomy and cooperation. Meanwhile, it can stimulate students to learn creatively and characteristically under the guidance of the teachers. In China, college English teaching is still oriented as teacher-centeredness. But for a long time teachers use traditional cramming teaching methods in English class, which contributes to the students'lack of opportunity to practice. Teachers are the major role in a class and they don't pay attention to the students'linguistic needs and studying style. Thus, students are becoming passive receptacles. The result is that students can't give their automation into full play, thus the effectiveness of teaching is impacted strongly. Under this circumstance, as a subject aimed at training students'communication ability, it is important for the teachers to carry out cooperative learning strategy in English class. It is indeed a good teaching and learning strategy. This thesis is based on the application of the team cooperative learning in English class, through the survey by questionnaire and interview on some teachers, such problems in cooperative learning as the formality and low-efficiency of the cooperation are found out. These problems are brought out by many factors together, which restrict the development of cooperative learning. So in this thesis a great comparison is made between cooperative learning and traditional teaching mode. In combination with the in-class teaching, the priority of cooperative learning is outstanding and thus the strategies of effective cooperative learning and its specific approaches practiced are put forward in English class. It is divided into four parts:PrefaceChapter one: the research on the current situation of cooperative learning existing in college English teachingChapter two: researches on the effectiveness of the cooperative learning in college English teachingChapter three: experimental research on the effectiveness of the cooperative...
