A Translation Report On Gods Go Begging(1)

This is a report on the translation of “1 Amazon Luncheonette” of Alfredo Véa's novel gods go begging which is a description of the murdering of two widows of the Vietnam War.The novel depicts the permanent trauma caused by the Vietnam War to ethnic people and the experiences of the Chicano veteran Jesse Pasadoble who became a criminal defense lawyer engaged himself in another gun-less war for the sake of justice.This novel is characterized with a mixture of languages,fragmentation of syntax,numerous rhetorical metaphors and mixed styles.From the perspective of Skopos Theory,translation should be aimed at making the target readers understand the original text based on keeping the style and contents of the original text.Based on this theory,the author adopted domestication and foreignization strategies in the translation of the first part “The Amazon Luncheonette” of the novel.The mixture of writers' language is expressed in English,Spanish,French and Vietnamese in vocabulary and simple dialogues.In dealing with the mixed languages,the author uses the zero translation,addition and transliteration.In the syntax processing,the author uses literal translation,free translation,division,combination and inversion.In the mixed style treatment,the author employs addition and the literal translation.In the expression of different cultures,the author uses cultural compensation,literal translation and rewriting.The author of this report expects that readers can gain some knowledge about the Chicano literature and Chicano People through her translation of Véa's gods go begging.
