The concept of “Student-centered” has become a major trend in the development of higher education in the world.Paying attention to the learning effects of students and paying attention to the learning behavior of college students has become an inevitable choice for higher education institutions in China.The classroom is the main channel of college teaching,so it is essential to study the effectiveness of college classroom teaching.College English is a compulsory course for undergraduates and its teaching effectiveness plays a crucial role in the cultivation of talents and the improvement of education ability.Therefore,questions about the effectiveness of college English classroom teaching have attracted widespread attention in the academic community.How to truly achieve the effectiveness of college English classroom teaching has become a problem that needs to be solved urgently.In order to improve the quality of college English classroom teaching in China,This thesis starts with the current situation of non-English major college English teaching.The author also used the humanism and constructivism as the theory.Then the questionnaires and interviews are employed to analyze the current status of college English teaching in China.The status quo and problems of non-English majors' classroom teaching effectiveness are discussed,and suggestions are proposed to improve the effectiveness of current college English classroom teaching.183 students of non-English majors from a university in northwestern China were selected as the subjects of the study.Questionnaire surveys and interviews were conducted.From the perspective of students,the students' performance in this learning phase of the study and the classroom teaching were analyzed.Subjective feelings were investigated,followed by a comparative analysis of the data by the SPSS software and a random interview conducted after the test.The findings were as follows:1.Problems in the process of college English class teaching: Some students think that the contents of the textbooks are slightly obsolete,and the teaching contents are out of line with the needs of the students;the teachers' teaching methods in the class are too single and they basically use the PPT multimedia teaching;There are less interactions between the teachers and the students in the class.The students' overall learning engagement is not high;students' subjective evaluation of classroom teaching effectiveness is low,and students' learning gains are not significant.2.The overall effectiveness of classroom teaching is positively related to the dimensions of the classroom teaching process.The teaching content,attitude,environment,methods,and results of classroom teaching are positively related to the overall effectiveness of classroom teaching,but the overall effectiveness of classroom teaching is most strongly correlated with student's learning engagement.It shows that the more student-centered and the more scientific and effective the various factors in the classroom teaching process,the higher the student's subjective evaluation of the overall effectiveness of classroom teaching.Therefore,this study concludes that we must start from the actual situation of the students and understand the level of students' participation in the English class learning and the students' investment in the study,so as to effectively reform the college English classroom teaching and improve the college English teaching quality.
