A Report On The Translation Of The Trip To Heilongjiang

This thesis is a translation practice report on the Chinese subtitle translation of the documentary--The Trip to Heilongjiang.It is the first film to comprehensively record the natural scenery and cultural customs of northern China.Because China lacks a relatively unified standard in the research of subtitle translation,it is necessary to study the translation of documentary subtitles.What is more,the documentary does not have synchronized English subtitles.In view of this deficiency,the author makes a research and analysis from two perspectives of the audience and the translator.Skopos theory is a relatively new translation theory developed by German translator Hans Vermeer,it is also the core theory of the functionalist school.The theory is basically an external study of translation,which focuses on the choice of all kinds of purposes during the translation process.Therefore,it is undoubtedly able to make up for the shortcomings of the traditional translation studies,so my translation practice is based on lots of cases under the guidance of Skopos theory with a brand-new research perspective for multidisciplinary exploration of translation.Under the direction of the three rules of Skopos theory,the author tries to translate The Trip to Heilongjiang and applies a detailed case analysis to analyze the translation strategies adopted in the translation from three perspectives--culture-loaded words,long and difficult sentences and discourse.These concrete examples prove to some extent the applicability of Skopos theory for the guidance of documentary subtitle translation.Skopos theory argues that translation is a purposeful activity and its purpose determines the choice of methods.Through this research,the author hopes that more researchers and scholars can focus on the study of this field,and translators can always bear in mind the expectation of target audiences so that good subtitles with high quality can be ensured,and the thesis can boost Heilongjiang humanities and geography and provide reference for translation in the field of subtitle texts.
