As the cultural exchanges are increasing,so is the demand for interpreting. In consecutive interpreting from Chinese to English, interpreters often use strategies to optimize the information processing,so as to achieve accurate understanding of the source text, concise interpretation of complete message, and appropriate re-expression in English.Of many strategies, omission and generalization are frequently used and play an important role in the practice.Based on the analysis of the author's interpreting practice during the mock session of the 4th World Internet Conference press conference, this thesis firstly discusses how to appropriately use omission and generalization, especially in two scenarios:interpreting content that is unique in Chinese and interpreting redundant and meaningless content.Besides, the thesis explores the main reasons causing inappropriate omission and generalization:namely, the interpreter unconsciously misses some information,or s/he misuses omission and/or generalization based on wrong decisions and thus renders ambiguous interpretation. Finally, the thesis summarizes when and how to use omission and generalization effectively and avoid inappropriate usages. The above discussions and reflections show that we interpreters need to keep constant learning and keep horning our skills. In practice,we need to analyze the situation we are in and be flexible in terms of utilizing strategies. With such efforts,we'll be able to master the interpreting strategies and deliver quality interpretations for the clients.
