China has seen a marked increase in the export of books that introduce Chinese culture, governance and political system as it moves closer to the center of the world stage. However, cultural, political and ideological differences plus the distinct language structure of the Chinese political texts has made the process challenging, especially for translators.Based on case studies of the English translation of The Great Way of China, the thesis discusses translation strategies for quotations and metaphors in Chinese political discourse by studying linguistics and translation works and literatures, comparing the first and the final draft, identifying and analyzing problems, and aims to inform and inspire other translators in need.Based on studies of previous works of figures of speech, language and textual analysis of The Great Way of China, the thesis identifies two categories of quotations and metaphors, which are Chinese classic sayings, adapted quotations,culture-loaded metaphors, and obscure metaphors and proposes four strategies targeting each category: to make clear the connections between the Chinese classic sayings and the following texts;to fish the connotations of the adapted quotations within the context;to clarify the connections between parts of the cultureloaded metaphors;and to shift the focus to associating metaphors within the larger metaphorical concept system that conveys the same message.
