Quotation is a common rhetoric device widely used in writing.Appropriate quotations can not only enhance the persuasiveness of the author's arguments, but also make the text more contagious. From the perspective of intertextuality theory, the use of quotations has clear intertextual effects, which often brings readers better reading experience.Translation itself is also an intertextual activity, and the translation of quotations faces many challenges in the realization of intertextual effect, while the translation of quotations with cultural features is particularly difficult. To achieve the intertextual function of quotations in target text,it is necessary for translators to adopt appropriate strategies based on full understanding of the culture of the original language and target language. The source text of this translation project are excerpted from the fourth and fifth chapters of How to Write & Give a Speech. How to Write & Give a Speech is a book that guides speech delivery and speech writing.During the process of reading the source text, the author of this article found that the book contains a large number of quotations. In addition to function like supporting the author's point of view or show excellent examples of their own rhetorical functions, the use of these quotations also achieves intertextual effects. The translation of quotation has become one of the key points in this translation project. In the translation process, the author of this article found that the difficulty of translating each quotation differs according to the cultural information contained in these quotations. It is necessary to think carefully and make adjustments.Based on specific translation practice of the book How to Write & Give a Speech, this article classifies the quotations involved in the book into two types from the perspective of intertextuality theory, namely the quotations with cultural features and the quotations without cultural features. For the translation of these two types of quotations, the author of this article also conducted a specific investigation and analysis of its textual functions. In the end, this article discusses the intertextual translation strategies of different types of quotations with typical examples of translation.Through the discussion of specific cases in translation, this article found that translation of quotations without cultural features should focus on the equivalence of their own rhetorical functions, while also taking into account the equivalence of the text structural functions. For the translation of quotations with cultural features, different methods like literal translation and interpretation should be adopted according to specific categories. Therefore, the effective translation of different types of quotations can improve the overall quality of the target text.
