Translation is a vital medium in the cross-cultural communication between China and other countries in the world.As cultural exchange gradually enhances and expands between China and other countries,many classic foreign literary works pour into China's market and attract translators' attention.The translation of these works is conducive to the improvement of the author's literary quality,the exchange and spreading between Chinese and foreign culture and the promotion of cultural globalization.The first three chapters of The Sins of the Mother by Danielle Steel are chosen as corpus of translation.The Sins of the Mother,as America's bestseller,depicts multiple love of the Graysons interwoven with complication,challenge,fun,passion,and unquenchable hope.Olivia,the heroine,built her empire of home-furnishings at the sacrifice of her time with her children's transient childhood.In order to make amends,she plans a luxury family vacation every year.This summer,she has prepared a dreamlike trip on a deluxe yacht in the Mediterranean Sea for them.However,because of her long-absence in children's growth,the road to forgiveness and understanding is doomed to be long and hard.Fortunately,at last they are reconciled with each other and a happy family comes.It is common today most of parents are too buried in their work to accompany their children's growth and have the gap and contradiction with their children.The author appeals to people's attention towards this by way of this novel.The lexical and syntactic differences between English and Chinese lead to the different ways of expression.While translating,to make the translation more natural,clear and readable,necessary words and clauses are amplified.This report mainly analyzes theapplication of amplification in The Sins of the Mother(excerpt)by some specific cases from four aspects: amplification for syntactic completeness,amplification for target language convention,amplification for semantic needs and amplification for rhetorical effect.Amplification for syntactic completeness includes amplifying verbs omitted in the coordinate structure and amplifying the preposition and noun;amplification for target language convention involves amplifying conjunctions and connectives,amplifying quantifiers,amplifying the functional word and turning passive to active voice by amplifying agents or subjects;amplification for semantic needs includes amplifying words to convey plural concept and amplifying explanatory words and clauses for pronouns;amplification for rhetorical effect involves the use of four-character structure and repetition.The use of amplification aims to faithfully represent the thought of the source text.By way of this practice,the author hopes to deepen the understanding toward amplification.
