Syntactic,Semantic And Pragmatic Analysis Of The Rhetorical Question In Modern Chinese

On the basis of the preceding researches, this thesis attempts to make a research on the rhetorical question in Modern Chinese. The writer attempts to make some new discoveries and breakthroughs on such issues as the structural differences between the rhetorical question and general interrogative sentence, the form marker of the rhetorical question, the semantic and pragmatic premises applied in the rhetorical question, the perspectives in grasping the semantic and pragmatic problems of this sentence type, and the semantic and pragmatic differences between the rhetorical question and general interrogative sentence.The first part of Chapter One analyzes the respective inner relationships of variation inherent in the rhetorical question and general interrogative sentence. These inner relationships of variation between these two question patterns differentiate greatly, though their surface form share some similarities. On the surface structure, the rhetorical question and general interrogative sentence are not of the strictly identical structures. The second part of Chapter One analyzes the rhetorical questions with different structure types. Analysis of these different types and features reveal that, different sentence types possess diverse characteristics in structure, form and communication.Chapter II studies the premises required in the semantics and pragmatics of the rhetorical question. The writer probes the various factors influencing the formatting of the mood in the rhetorical question, as well as the relationships between the duality of semantics and the style in the context .The thesis studies the pragmatic characteristics and the function of the rhetorical question .The second part of Chapter Two studies differences between the semantic and pragmatic aspects in the rhetorical question and the general interrogative sentence. The writer of the thesis holds that t the rhetorical question differentiates grammaticallyfrom the general interrogative sentence, in such aspects as the phrase collocation (for instance, in adverbial word).Besides, these two types of sentence distinguish each other in the semantic researches in and pragmatic aspects.This thesis makes exhaustive analysis on the sentence structure, semantics and pragmatic aspects, puts forward their form marker, and carries out deeper research into the semantic and pragmatic the rhetorical question.
