A Report On The Simulated Consecutive Interpretation Of Kofi Annan's Conversation With The President Of Macalester College

The practice is a simulated consecutive interpretation of the interview of Kofi Annan,the former UN Secretary-General.The topics of leadership,refugees,Syria Civil War and the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula are included.Kofi Annan's unique insights and deep analysis are beneficial for readers.Since the themes of the interview are unknown,the pre-interpretation preparation is difficult and complex.The author predicts the themes by analyzing the background of the interview,the identities of the speaker and referring to other celebrity interviews held in colleges.The interview contains many international events and terminology,which challenge the author's ability of comprehension and expression.Therefore,the author combines the Interpretive Theory and other skills(such as the use of super-ordinate terms,vague words and omission of unimportant terminology).Besides,there are rich implications and emotions in Kofi Annan's talk(such as compassion,dissatisfaction,irony and expectation),so the author has observed the speaker's expressions,body languages and mood.Through the practice and analysis,the author draws the following conclusions.First,political material calls for high ability of comprehension.The context,speaker's identity and political stand,as well as interpretation strategies should be concerned.Second,political terminology and international events have their history and the current state,therefore except preparation the interpreter should stick to news reading,which is beneficial for quick response and better performance.Third,communication is the aim of the interview and interpretation.The interpreter should stand in the place of audiences and make the production easier to be understood.Four,emotion is also a kind of communication,and the interpreter should observe the speaker's expressions and convey the speaker's emotion with proper tones and sentence types.Finally,according to the author's limitations and teaching theories of interpretation(such as Xiamen University Model)the plan of future study is developed: strengthening the bilingual ability,accumulating knowledge of different fields and developing the interpretation skills.
