The English Curriculum Standard for General Senior High School(2017 Edition)clearly defines the cultivation of thinking quality as one of the important goals of English reading teaching in senior high school.Many problems,however,remain unsolved in this respect.Reading is an integral part of English teaching in senior high school.To this end,the present study,taking 53 Senior grade 1 students in JM high school in XM city(Fujian Province)as the research subject,conducts two rounds of action research on the cultivation of thinking quality in the normal English reading class in order to explore how to cultivate students' thinking quality in English reading teaching in senior high school.Attempts have been made to investigate the subsequent questions:(1)What are the specific teaching activities for cultivating three dimensions of thinking quality(logicality,criticalness and creativity)in English reading teaching in senior high school?(2)What about the effects of these relevant teaching activities in English reading teaching in senior high school?(3)What are those problems in the cultivation process in English reading teaching in senior high school ? And what about the solutions available?In the implementation of action research,the first round seeks to cultivate both logical and critical thinking qualities,and thus proposes a series of corresponding teaching activities,such as identifying the genre of the article,analyzing the textual structure,predicting the development of the content and evaluating the thoughts or ideas,etc.On this basis,the second round of action research,with a focus on the creative thinking quality,suggests teaching activities such as appreciating the rhetoric of the passage,continuing to write a story and designing a poster.The effect test findings show that,the students' thinking quality and reading performance have been significantly improved,which indicate that the teaching activities are effective for developing thinking quality.The implications and suggestions of this study have been given in the expectation of shedding some lights on thinking quality cultivation in current English reading teaching in senior high school.
