Rumination refers to continuous and repetitive thinking to depressive symptoms.causes,meanings and outcomes.Memory updating is one of the sub-components of executive function,which means constant monitoring and rapid addition/deletion of working memory contents,including monitoring,coding,deletion,sorting.replacement and storage of new information.The relationship between rumination and memory updating has been a hot topic in recent research,while the results are inconsistent.Previous studies mostly classified the subjects at both ends of the negative rumination level and measured the difference of memory updating function between the two types of subjects.In this study,the subjects were divided into positive ruminators,negative ruminators and low ruminators.In study 1,we explored the characteristics of different ruminators in ruminant thinking and their mental health through qualitative interviews to find what needs to be further improved.Based on this,in study 2,with longitudinal research design,we conduct a six-time rumination intervention with 150 minutes for every time to thirteen college students(4 positive ruminators,5 negative ruminators and 4 low ruminators).Meanwhile,in order to explore the effect of the change in ruminant thinking on the memory updating.emotional vocabulary was used as experimental material and 2-back as experimental paradigm to measure the changes of memory updating function before and after intervention.The results showed that the characteristics of ruminant thinking were different among the three types of ruminators.The level of mental health of positive ruminators was higher than that of low and negative ruminators.The intervention could significantly promote positive rumination in all three types,of which low ruminators decreased negative rumination significantly and negative ruminators reduced negative rumination and anxiety and improved subjective well-being.Compared with the control group,there was no significant improvement in memory updating.The reaction time of positive ruminators to neutral stimulation decreased significantly and that of negative ruminators to negative stimulation and neutral stimulation decreased marginally.There was no significant improvement in low ruminators.
