At present,it is generally believed that translation is a cross-language and cross-cultural communication activity.Since the process of translation will definitely involve the conversion of code,so pragmatics becomes the most relevant subject of translation studies.Based on pragmatics, the Adaptation Theory is proposed by the Belgian linguist Jef Verschueren which analyzes the pragmatic orientation of the translation process from four levels of linguistic meaning, namely, context components, linguistic structure levels, dynamics, and degree of consciousness prominence. In view of the diversity of translation studies, this article takes the role dialogue as the focus of research.Character dialogue plays a vital role in the novel which is the principle method to promote the story and shape the characters. The dialogue of the characters is flexible and diverse including both colloquial language and written language. Therefore, the translation of the character dialogue is all-encompassing,and research on that is also highly covered and applicable. This thesis selects the Uygur translation of Yan Geling's novel "The Ninth Widow" as the source of corpus and takes Adaption Theory as the basis of theory.By analyzing its application in the translation of character dialogue,we put forward "carefulness, expressiveness, fluency, and elegance" as four criteria in the translation process of character dialogue. This paper consists of five chapters, which are divided into three parts: introduction-body-conclusion.In the introductory part, the writing background and content summary of the Ninth Widow are briefly described. The literatures of related research in recent years are also sorted out, among which material related to the "Ninth Widow",the translation of novel characters dialogue, and the theory of adaptation and translation are analyzed. The purpose, significance and innovation of the writing are also pointed out.The main section is divided into three parts: the first part is the first chapter—the overall analysis of the translation of the characters' dialogue, starting from the translation strategy, principles, methods and techniques to make a comprehensive and objective description of the translation. The second part is the second chapter to the fourth chapter which established the framework. On the basis of the first chapter, the four levels that need to be paid attention to in the translation process are refined. With the perspective of the translation in the process of adaptation as the main idea, the adaptation of context components, the conformity of language structure, the dynamics of compliance, and the degree of consciousness in the process of adaptation are analyzed from macro to micro. The third part is the fifth chapter.According to the analysis framework mentioned above, the typical problems found are listed. At the same time, the five criteria of dialogue translation based on adaptation theory are boldly proposed: the “carefulness” of translation attitude;the expressiveness of translation arrangement;the fluency of the word-choosing;the correspondence of sentence patterns;the elegance of post-translational modification. The conclusion part summarizes the previous contents and the writing arrangement of the whole paper. At the same time, personal opinions on translation techniques are put forward, the inadequacies are pointed out and optimization strategies are proposed. This paper analyzes the translation strategies, methods and principles of the characters' dialogue in the Ninth Widow by enumerating specific examples, and uses the theory of adaptation to explore the essence of translation to better grasp the generation and understanding of translation terms.A new path to study the Ninth Widows is opened up and new ideas for the translation of character dialogue are provided.
