Academic paper writing is an effective way to achieve academic communication. For one thing, the innovation of academic discourse helps us grasp the development of international disciplines. For another thing, the creation of academic papers is conducive to the promotion of academic research results in China. In general, the author quotes the views of others in the academic writing as well as expresses his own voice. Therefore,in order to study what voices are in academic papers and how these voices realize the interaction in academic discourse of different disciplines, this thesis takes "Investigator Voice" and "Critic Voice" in academic discourse as an example. In the present study, statistics of the voices expressed by the author in the introduction section of academic papers are analyzed based on the theoretical framework of Martin and White's(2008)Engagement system and the metadiscourse in accordance with Hyland and Tse's(2004)classification model. The thesis aims to answer the following questions:what are the voices in academic discourse of different disciplines and how are these voices realized in Engagement system? What are the similarities and differences between these voices of different disciplines? How do these voices achieve the construction of multi-voice interaction? The corpus of this study contains 200 academic papers including 100 papers of Engineering(EG)and 100 papers of Linguistics(LG)retrieved from Science Direct database.Ten journals were chosen for each discipline, and 10 papers published from 2010 to 2015 of each journal were selected randomly.Different references of these 200 papers were classified according to Swales'(1990)classification of reference. And the voices in different references were classified according to Hyland's(2004)classification method of metadiscourse by using the software UAM.In this thesis we pursued research on Investigator Voice and Critic Voice. The research concluded that authors express both voices in papers of Engineering and Linguistics, while authors mainly express the Critic Voice in papers of Linguistics. In order to investigate how these voices are reflected in the engagement system, this study marked the engagement resources of various references, and showed their distribution in this paper. The results showed that in Engineering papers "Critics Voice" is achieved by the following resources:expansion, attribute, acknowledge,in word "argue","report" and "believe",and "Investigator Voice" is achieved by the resources:contraction, proclaim, endorse,in word "show","prove",and"demonstrate".In Linguistics papers "Critic Voice" is achieved by the following resources:contraction, proclaim, endorse,in word "prove","show" and "report",and"Investigator Voice" through resources:contraction, proclaim, concur, concede,in word"but"and"however".The voices reflected in the intervention resources showed the similarities and differences between the different disciplines."Investigator Voice" shows a higher similarity between different disciplines, while "Critics Voice" obviously shows more discipline differences.Subsequently, the similarities and differences between voices in different disciplines were interpreted and interdisciplinary multi-voice interaction was discussed. Finally, the thesis indicated the drawbacks of the study that the research data are not sufficient, and the research method is some kind subjectivity, putting forward some suggestions and inspiration for the study of voice in academic discourse.
