In recent years our nation has released several important documents about curriculum reform which require enhancing the curriculum reform in all-round methods and implement the fundamental task of cultivating students with good morals.It is pointed out in the documents that the education bureau is going to organize the research for making the essential competency system based on the development of the students at their own stage and make it clear about the must-have qualities and the key capacities which the students should have to adapt to their life-long development and the development of the society.The discussion about the key competency is becoming a hot issue,but the research on the key competency for the Chinese students is still in its early stages and the deep understanding of it hasn't been reached.Therefore,it's necessary to pay more attention to it to promote the development of the key competency.As for the basic education,the teaching of each subject is the main approach to develop the students' key competency.It has been found out that the current teaching status still has lots of problems through the survey from the documents,thus the research aims to explore what the current development status of English key competency in Jinan's Junior High Schools is like and the factors which influence the key competency.Furthermore,how to develop the English Key Competency for Junior High School students is analyzed in a more effective way based on the research result.The analysis can be offered as a reference for education departments,schools and front line teachers.This research illustrates the meaning,the cultivation methods and solutions and the overall framework for the development of Chinese students' key competency in the essay overview part.Furthermore,it illustrates the research status of English key competency including the meaning,the content,the evaluation methods,and the cultivation methods or strategy of it.Based on this,the questionnaires for teachers and students and class observation are designed.It showed that the cultivation of the English key competency for Jinan's Junior High Schools is not balanced.On the aspect of language ability,the students' pragmatic competency needs improving.As for the cultural awareness,most students can respect and understand the culture diversity,but their intention and ability to use English to introduce Chinese culture needs improving due to their low level of sensitivity for the culture difference.As for the critical thinking quality,the students' ability to observe,compare,analyze and hypothesize is strong,whereas their ability to conclude,construct,criticize and create in a deeper level is low.As for the learning ability,most students are not motivated and lack of plan for their own learning.Their ability to keep reflecting themselves to adjust their learning method and strategy needs improving.Then I analyzed the teachers' questionnaire and the class observation records and discussed the factors that influence the development of English key competency in Jinan's Junior High Schools,which include these following aspects.The curriculum setting is fixed which it can't satisfy the students' personal development;the teaching materials are not up to date;the teaching theory,methods,design,evaluation,reflection and so on need improving.Furthermore,some related suggestions regarding how to develop the Junior High School students' English key competency more effectively are proposed based on the research result and analysis.And then the good methods which are worth being advocated and are accomplished by the schools being researched are illustrated.I hope this research can provide an effective reference for the education department,the schools and the frontline teachers.
