As a supplementary means of school English teaching,to a certain extent,extracurricular English tutoring can meet the diversified and individualized needs of education.In recent years,with the development of social economy and the improvement of family education awareness,parents have increasing investments in English education for students,and extracurricular tutoring institutions have sprung up like mushrooms at a very rapid speed.However,compared with the formal English teaching at schools,although extracurricular English tutoring has its own characteristics such as market-orientation and individuality,it has certain deficiencies such as teaching effects,teaching quality,management and supervision on extracurricular tutoring institutions.Therefore,this study investigated the current situation of Junior students' extracurricular English tutoring in Wanzhou District,Chongqing City.It aims to investigate the problems of extracurricular English tutoring institutions and their teaching,and try to offer suggestions from three aspects,i.e.students,institutions and education authorities.This study used questionnaire and interview to investigate the current situation of Junior students' extracurricular English tutoring in Wanzhou District.First of all,this research conducted a questionnaire survey on 180 Junior students who have participated in extracurricular English tutoring in 3 middle schools in Wanzhou District to investigate the basic situation of students' extracurricular English tutoring,the impact of participating in extracurricular English tutoring on their study,and their evaluation of English tutoring.Then,this research conducted interview with 4 English teachers and 2 administrators from extracurricular tutoring institutions to investigate the scale of tutoring institutions,teaching faculty,and daily teaching management.Through the analysis of the data of student questionnaires and teacher interviews,this study found out that:(1)The main reason for Junior students' extracurricular English tutoring is to cultivate excellence and make up for deficiency to achieve better performance.(2)The major factors affecting Junior students' extracurricular English tutoring institutions are learning effects and curriculum design.(3)Participating in extracurricular English tutoring can improve Junior students' academic performance,but easily cause students' “utilitarian pursuit”,which increased students' academic pressure and affected their physical and mental health.(4)The English tutoring institutions in Wanzhou District have such problems as uneven qualifications,uneven teaching faculty,high teacher mobility,and lack of effective internal management and external supervision.By exploring the existing problems of extracurricular English tutoring in Wanzhou district,in order to better improve the English learning ability of Junior students in Wanzhou district,this research put forward some suggestions for students,institutions and education authorities.First,Junior students should treat English tutoring rationally,choose English tutoring agencies carefully,and balance the relationship between extracurricular English tutoring and English learning at school.Secondly,extracurricular English tutoring institutions should strengthen daily management and pay more attention to teacher development.Finally,the education authority should improve the admittance standards for extracurricular tutoring institutions and strengthen their supervision on extracurricular tutoring institutions.
