The novel “the House on Mango Street”,written by Sandra Cisneros,a Mexican American famous writer, depicts the painful growth experience of Esperanza,a Mexican little girl and her own effort to construct an ideal house in her mind. The novel reveals the various plights of Mexican Americans and their different responses to this dilemma. This is a novel about the issues of Mexican-American racial and gender identity. The implicit theme of the novel is to treat their cultural identities and racial identities correctly.Space theory has important significance to the analysis of literary works, the theme of novels and the revelation of characters' identity.Different from the traditional way of literary research, the study of space theory provides a new perspective for exploring the theme of the text and digging the deep meaning of the works.Based on Henri Lefebvre's space theory, this paper interprets the identity crisis of Mexican Americans in the novel from spatial practice and representational space. From a unique perspective, this thesis attempts to understand the ideological change, the inner appeal and the practical activities in the construction of identity, and reveals the efforts made by the Mexican blacks for their individual, self and collective identity in different spaces.
