As a basic channel of language input, reading is an important and useful method to learn English, just as listening, speaking, writing and translating does. The main purpose of English reading teaching is to help students master correct methods and reading skills to lay the basis for further learning and applying English.According to the requirement of English Curriculum Standards,English teaching should put more emphasis on the improvement of reading ability. However,as we can see, students' reading ability and self-learning ability are still worrying. As an important supplement and extension of class reading, the function of extra-curricular reading should be paid more attention to.This thesis tries to find out the current situation and problems existing in Junior high school students' English reading. In order to improve students' reading ability and autonomous learning ability, teachers' scaffolding roles would be adopted to test its function. As an action research, the author regarded students in her teaching class as the subject. Therefore, the author was also the researcher. Before the experiment, basic information would be gathered through questionnaire and tests.During the process, under the guidance of different theories, students were the center of the process with the teachers' help. After that, the final result of this research would be got through the post-questionnaire and the final tests. After the analyses of information,we could summarize that students' reading ability and autonomous learning ability are all developed under the guidance of teachers' scaffolding roles. However, there are still shortcomings in this research, for example, the small number of subjects and short period of the research. All in all,the guidance of teachers' scaffolding roles is very helpful in cultivating students' reading ability and autonomous learning ability which should be gained attention from both professionals and researchers.Hopefully, this research could provide support for further research and teachers' English teaching process.
