James Dickey is a famous American poet and writer, and his best-known novel is Deliverance.Consisting of five chapters, the novel tells us about four middle-aged men who found the meaning of life after a life-or-death fight with mountain men they encountered on a canoe trip. There is no Chinese version of Deliverance yet.The translation project is presided by Professor Zhao Wei,the supervisor of the authoress. This report is based on the translation of the second chapter September 14th.Translation examples are analyzed from style fidelity, which is one of the general problems in literary translation.Based on the characteristics of the selected text, translation of style is classified into five categories.1)Dickey's work is characterized by frequent use of dialogues, which was translated with colloquial style and with skills like deletion;2)Dickey's work is characterized by frequent use of dialect, which was translated with "universal Chinese dialects" to reproduce the difference between the civilized and the uncivilized characters;3)Dickey's work is characterized by mystified representation of common and familiar things, which was translated with preservation of rhetorical devices to preserve this sense of mystery;4)like his poems,Dickey's novel presents many shifts between the real and the surreal, which were rendered with addition and sentence-splitting to make the translation more expressive and faithful;5)the novel is a documentary reflection of Dickey's personal life and the society, which was preserved by the accurate reproduction of the culture conveyed. It is hoped that this report will be of some help to the researches on the translation of the novel Deliverance and James Dickey's writing style.
