James Dickey is a famous poet and novelist of contemporary American literature. The novel Deliverance, first published in 1970,is the best-selling and most-influential work of James Dickey. It was ranked as one of the 100 best 20th-Century novels and made into a film in 1970.The novel has no Chinese version up to now.The translation project of Deliverance is presided by Professor Zhao Wei,the supervisor of the authoress. The report is based on the authoress's translation of Chapter 4"September 16th".Narrated in the first person by Ed Gentry, the novel tells a story about a wilderness adventure in time order.Chapter 4 serves as the climax of the adventure. With the poetic and documentary writing style as well as the usage of Gothic elements and dialogues, the novel represents the spiritual crisis and deliverance of the middle class.According to the characteristics of the literary text, the report mainly discusses the specific problems encountered during the translation and the corresponding solutions from its stylistic features,1)The poetic style is typical of Dickey'work. It is translated with four-character and six-character structures in Chinese to reproduce the aesthetics and rhythm.2)The documentary style is not only reflected in the account of the canoe trip, but also the presentation of the theme. The plots are depicted objectively in detail and the narrative is often blended with reality and illusions. Some onomatopoeic words and Chinese link words are used to reproduce this sense of reality and strengthen the mix of the reality and illusions.Besides, great importance should be attached to the study of the historical background and the writer's life experience to convey the spiritual crisis and deliverance of the middle class.3)Gothic elements of the Southern mountain tradition are employed to highlight the harsh environment, violent scenes and ruthless hillbillies. They are translated in such a way as to recreate the gloomy and mysterious atmosphere.4)Dialogues are frequently used for characterization. They are translated with proper style, vulgar, humorous or ironic,to suit each character. The authoress hopes that the solutions will be useful to novel translators and the report can make some contributions to the study of novel translation.
